Well. A whole 2 weeks have passed since my first post.
But my son and I have not sat idly by. In that time we have enjoyed no less than two films at the actual cinema.
We’ve seen 500 Days of Summer and Julie & Julia at our local cinema’s parent and baby showings (CineMA & BABY). Aside from being a vital part of my (8 week old) son’s cultural education there are the additional benefits of reasonably priced flapjacks and hot cups of tea.
Honestly can’t recommend it enough. Loads of cinemas do these screenings, typically involving slightly lower sound levels, slightly higher lighting levels and changing and bottle warming facilities. And no entry without a baby in tow so no one bothers about screaming.
It’s glorious grownup time (albeit completely surrounded on all sides by various sizes of baby), a chance to meet other mums and, contrary to being a selfish indulgence, the babies seem to love it – the atmosphere, the sounds, the moving pictures and the other babies. Being able to go to the flicks during the day must be one of the top perks of maternity leave. Along with watching new life develop, obviously.
The only downside I’ve identified are the unpredictable spurts of milk from my fountain-like breasts during feeding which can make it a fairly nerve jangling outing at points (had visions of squirting my newly made mummy-friend in the face. Not a great ice-breaker).
However of you’ve also got problems with overactive nips, Film 4 are doing a great line in 1940s film noir of an afternoon at the moment. From the comfort of the sofa, with just the cats for company (who’ve learned to keep well out the way at feeding time), we’ve seen Leave Her to Heaven, Brief Encounter, and The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry. All brilliant. And because Film 4 show each film a few times over the month you get several bites of the cherry should parental responsibilities disrupt viewing at any time.
I’m making the most of it while our days still revolve around sleeping and eating.
